As you might be aware by now, Artificial intelligence (AI) is on the rise. AI is transforming many industries including civil engineering. In recent years, many advancements have been made in AI through machine learning and deep learning to create powerful computer programs that can solve everyday problems. While you may already be familiar with widely used AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney, there are unique and specific applications of AI in civil engineering worth exploring.

1. Design optimization

Artificial intelligence can be used to optimize building and infrastructure designs by analyzing thousands of design iterations, considering factors like structural integrity, aesthetics, and cost. AI algorithms can help quickly explore design options and provide recommendations, leading to more efficient and cost-effective designs.

As an example, Arup (an architectural & infrastructural firm), developed an AI software called MassMotion, to optimize the design of buildings. The software can simulate the movement of people through buildings and public spaces. The tool then analyzes many design interactions based on building layout, pedestrian flow and safety so as to optimize the design.

2. Construction Scheduling

Predicting the critical path for many construction projects can be a complex task that requires skill and experience; however, with the power of AI algorithms, this process can be now simplified. AI can analyze and determine the critical path, resource availability, and other constraints on a project. Therefore with the help of AI algorithms, essential insights on the optimal sequence of construction events and resource allocation can be obtained, thereby helping to optimize project duration and cost.

3. Predictive maintenance

With the power of AI, signs of degradation, including wear and tear, on structures like bridges can be detected through analysis data obtained from sensors placed on the structures. Artificial intelligence can then be used to predict when maintenance is required, and hence prevent failures as well as increase the lifespan of the structures.

The Bilfinger Structural Health monitoring system in the video below uses sensors to detect and monitor the structural state of bridges for maintenance and safety purposes.

4. Satefy management

AI tools are now being used to detect potential safety hazards on construction sites through the analysis of video footage. As an example, an AI algorithm can detect workers on site who are not wearing the required protective gear or working in hazardous positions. These AI tools can then send an alert to the project manager to take corrective action and prevent accidents.

A company called Ability developed AI smart cameras that can be used on construction sites to ensure compliance with safety procedures and protocols as shown in the video below.

5. Traffic management

If you are a traffic engineer, Artificial intelligence is here to rescue you. Today, AI can be used to manage traffic flow on roads and highways, hence reducing congestion and travel time. AI programs use real-time data from traffic cameras and sensors to predict traffic patterns as well as any bottlenecks. The AI programs can then adjust traffic signals to optimize the traffic flow and reduce congestion.

As an example, the video below demonstrates an AI-powered tool by Advantech that is used to monitor vehicles and roads and help with the traffic management.
